North Carolina National Guard Soldiers and Airmen Assistance Fund

Throughout the State of North Carolina, Army and Air Guardsmen are called to mobilization duty for our country, for state duty for natural disasters, and other required duties. In the absence of their Soldier or Airman, families are dealing with the challenging issues of day-to-day life. Their concerns are many, and sometimes they need assistance.

The Soldiers and Airmen Assistance Fund provides emergency aid to our Guard families in financial crisis. Like other families, sometimes our Soldiers and Airmen suffer job loss, illness, unexpected expenses, or disasters which place them in financial need. Our Fund helps them through difficult times.

How you donate to the fund.
  1. Your tax-deductible donation to the Soldiers and Airmen Assistance Fund will help us help our Families. Donations may be made payable to “NCNG SAAF” and mailed to our office at NCNG SAAF, 7410 Chapel Hill Road, Raleigh, North Carolina 27607-5047.
  2. There are other ways to donate to the Fund – purchasing a “Support Our Troops” license plate and our “Old Hickory At Baqubah” print by famed military artist Don Stivers.

Old Hickory at Baqubah by Don Stivers (limited edition) – $20.00

While on patrol in Baqubah, iraq, the third platoon of Alpha Co., 120th Infantry, NC National Guard, was ambushed by a large enemy force at dawn on June 24, 2004. This ambush signaled the start of a two-day battle. Despite overwhelming odds, Alpha Company’s discipline and leadership allowed them to inflict heavy losses upon the enemy time and time again.

How did the Fund Start?

Chaplain Col. Aubrey McLellan was a Chaplain for the North Carolina National Guard and served nearly 40 years in uniform before retiring following the 1991 Gulf War. One of his last acts as a Soldier was to create what was then called “The Chaplain’s Fund” designed to benefit the families of deployed service members.

Application Process
  1. Grant Request Form – include a detailed statement fully explaining the emergency and reasons for your request for assistance. Include any information you think might support your request. Current financial information is vital – include your sources of income and amounts, and describe your current debts. If mobilized, a copy of current monthly Leave and Earnings Statement (LES) must be included, with explanation of all debts and allotments.
  2. Financial Worksheet: Include copies (NOT originals) of CURRENT bills, etc., supporting your request. Be sure bills include amount owed, due date, account number, and creditor mailing address. Bills that are not current (current billing cycle) will not be considered. For overdue rent issues, a statement from landlord is acceptable.
  3. A detailed supporting statement from unit commander, senior NCO or full-time staff, or Family Assistance Center Coordinator. This statement may not simply say you need support, but must clearly indicate the writer has verified your emergency and fully supports it. The statement must indicate that the applicant is a member in good standing – not an unsatisfactory participant nor flagged for adverse actions. NOTE: Applications for assistance will not be considered without complete supporting documents. Please read the above instructions closely and ensure you include all information to avoid delay in considering your application.
