ARMY MEDICAL (AMEDD) TRAINING/REQUIREMENTS & BENEFITS

For most medical personnel your “Basic Training” consists of a two week course taught at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas and is designed to familiarize newly appointed medical officers with the Army medical procedures. This training will include wear and appearance of the Army uniform, customs and courtesy’s, code of conduct and Army familiarization with Army terminology. This training may be done in lieu of or in addition to your required two weeks of Annual Training each year.

Other types of training available are Continuing Medical Education which may be attended in military status in lieu of part of your annual training requirement.

Clinical Clerkship Training opportunities are available at various locations in the continental United States at Army Medical Facilities. This program can also be done in lieu of your two week Annual Training requirement.

The National Guard requires you to participate 39 days a year for experiences you can get nowhere else and pays you for all required days. The National Guard offers flexible training to Medical Officers to help with your busy schedules.

  • DIRECT COMMISSION as a second lieutenant upon graduation from an undergraduate program and acceptance for attendance at a medical school.
  • EARN OVER $28,000 in pay and allowances while attending medical school as an officer in the National Guard.
  • GI Bill: Full-time students are eligible for $297.00 per month for 36 months.
  • TUITION ASSISTANCE: Members of the North Carolina Army National Guard are eligible for $4,500 in tuition assistance per academic year for up to four years while attending an in-state school.
  • CLERKSHIPS: During your M3 and M4 years, you may apply for one of the several clerkships available at many military medical centers around the country. While in attendance, you would receive full active-duty pay and allowances over $3,200 as a 2LT and over $3,600 as a 1LT (based on an average 30-day clerkship).
  • TRAINING: You would be required to attend a two-week orientation course that can be done in lieu of Annual Training and may have the opportunity to attend other medical/military training.
  • RETIREMENT: You would participate in two non-contributory retirement programs that would provide you with an annuity after twenty years of service at age 60. One is the Reserve Component retirement program of the Federal government; the other is a state retirement program for members of the NCARNG.
  • FREE SPACE AVAILABLE AIR TRAVEL: You can fly free on a space-available basis anyplace serviced by scheduled military transport flights.
  • LOW COST GROUP LIFE INSURANCE: For $26.00 a month you will receive $400,000 of life insurance (or you can choose a smaller amount if you wish).

Additional incentives for Doctor, Dentist, Nurse Anesthetist and Physician Assistants are available.
