Our Mission
To serve as an extension of the eyes, ears, voice and conscience of the Adjutant General through the four tenants of the Inspector General Office: Teach and Train, Assistance, Investigation and Inspection. This supports the Adjutant General and subordinate commanders in achieving disciplined and combat ready units that will maintain the operational effectiveness and preparedness of the North Carolina National Guard.
The NCNG JFHQ IG office can provide IG assistance to both Soldiers and Airmen.

 What is the Inspector General

The Inspector General is a special staff officer of the commander, providing the commander with a sounding board for sensitive issues. The IG is an extension of the commander’s eyes, ears, and conscience. The role of the Inspector General is to determine and report on the economy, efficiency, discipline, morale, esprit de corps, readiness, and resources of the command. In other words, the Inspector General is interested in every aspect of the command.
What IGs can do for the Commander:
  • IG’s can provide a great deal of assistance to commanders.
  • IG’s are linked worldwide through a technical channel and can gather information quickly and confidentially.
  • IG’s work closely with Soldier/Airmen support agencies (Chaplain, JAG, Red Cross, ACS, etc.) to resolve problems. The IG can help you get started in the right direction.
JFHQ-NC-IG Functions:
The four basic functions of the Inspector General are used to accomplish our mission. Those functions are as follows:

Steps to take Before Contacting the IG

  • Be sure you have a problem, not just a peeve. (Examples of valid concerns are abuse of authority, allegations of injustice, mismanagement, substantial danger to the public health or safety, violations of laws or directives, and waste of funds.)
  • Give your chain of command a chance to solve the problem. (Your Commander and First Sergeant are your primary channels for resolving complaints.)
  • Be honest and don't provide misleading information. (IGs will discover the truth quickly in most cases and there are penalties for knowingly providing false information.)
  • Keep in mind that IGs are not policy makers. (If a policy is flawed you can submit proposed change on a DA form 2028.)
  • Keep in mind that IGs can only recommend, not order a resolution. (Only Commanders can order; the role of the IG is to advise the Commander.
  • Remember IGs can only resolve a case on the basis of fact. (Your claim that a supervisor has violated the rules doesn't make it fact. A claim must be supported with evidence.)
  • Don't expect instant action on your request... Be patient. (Investigations take time, and IGs tend to have heavy workloads.)

  • Be prepared to take "NO" for the answer. (In any case, "Yes" or "no," the IG will explain why

What Does the Inspector General Do

ANYONE may submit a complaint or request for assistance to an Army/ Air Force IG concerning matters of interest to the Army/Air Force.

Teach and Train:

Teaching and training is integral part of the first three functions. IG’s by their very nature possess a wealth of knowledge and experience. They use this knowledge and experience when assisting, inspecting, and investigating to teach Soldiers/Airmen at all levels about policies and procedures.

IG’s conduct inspections at the direction of the commander. An IG inspection may focus on organizations, functions or both and may or may not be compliance oriented.

IG’s only conduct investigations when directed by the commander. The investigation will focus on violations of policy or regulations. The commander may also direct an investigation into alleged mismanagement, unethical behavior, or misconduct.
