CSM Swart enlisted in the North Carolina Army National Guard in the Spring of 1981 and was assigned as an Infantryman in C Company 1st Battalion 119th Infantry (Mechanized) in Edenton, NC.
He has served in Infantry leadership positions from Fire Team Leader to Squad Leader. CSM Swart also served in Military Police leadership positions as Squad Leader and Platoon Sergeant. His other assignments include Training NCO, Readiness NCO, Operations Sergeant, Knowledge Management NCO, Enlisted Personnel Manager, First Sergeant, and Brigade Operations Sergeant Major. Prior to his current assignment, he served as Command Sergeant Major in a Combined Arms Battalion, a Heavy Brigade Combat Team, and as Commandant of a Non Commissioned Officer Academy.
CSM Swart’s unit assignments include C Company 1st Battalion 119th Infantry (Mechanized), Edenton and Elizabeth City, NC; 213th Military Police Company, Washington, NC; 60th Troop Command, Rocky Mount, NC; 139th Rear Operations Center, Morrisville, NC; Joint Force Headquarters, Raleigh, NC; 120th Combined Arms Battalion, Wilmington, NC; 30th Heavy Brigade Combat Team, Clinton, NC; 139th Regiment (Combined Arms), Fort Bragg, NC; and is currently serving as the State Command Sergeant Major for the North Carolina National Guard.
His major deployments include Bosnia (SFOR II) in 1997-1998, Afghanistan (OEF/CJTF-180) in 2002, and Iraq (OIF 09-10) in 2009-2010.
His military education includes the Primary Leadership Development Course, Basic Non Commissioned Officer Course, Advanced Non Commissioned Officer Course, and the United States Army Sergeant Major Academy.
CSM Swart’s awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Achievement Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Good Conduct Medal (8th Award), National Defense Service Medal (2nd Award), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal (10 Year, M, and Numeral 3), NCO Professional Development Ribbon (Numeral 4), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbon, NATO Medal, NCNG Meritorious Service Medal, NCNG Commendation Medal, NCNG Achievement Medal (2nd Award), NCNG State Active Duty Ribbon (6th Award), and the NCNG Service Ribbon (5th Award). Other honors include the Legionnaire Medal of the Order of Saint Maurice from the National Infantry Association.
He has 58 college semester hours and is working toward a Bachelor of Business Administration degree.
CSM Swart is married with three children and two grandchildren.
